Invitation – Press Conference on the 18 of March, a few days ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
On the 21st of March each year, the world commemorates the International Day Against Racial Discrimination.
On this occasion, the families of the activists detained due to their civil and humanitarian work related to migration and asylum are organizing a press conference on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 10 AM at the headquarters of the National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT).
The families seek direct communication with journalists to inform public opinion on the following key issues
Update the public in the latest developments in legal cases as well as the situation of detainees
Respond to the rumors, false accusations, and racist, violent rhetoric
Inform of the upcoming stages in the fight against the criminalization of civil and humanitarian work
While the Tunisian government, in its response to UN rapporteurs (November 2024), explicitly acknowledges the role of civil society in supporting its efforts in the management and assistance to the migrants and asylum management;
While migration crises continue to escalate in the absence of rational solutions (Zarzis, Amra, Khmir Mountains, Greater Tunis…);
Those who have worked to assist the state in managing these crises—ensuring Tunisia’s response aligns with its ratified treaties, enacted laws, constitutional principles, and pioneering stance against slavery and racism—now continue to be detained and prosecuted.
On this occasion, the families invite all journalists to attend the press conference and engage in in-depth reporting by reviewing the press files that will be shared. They are also encouraged to consult the guidance documents prepared by the SNJT on migration issues and trial coverage.
