Mustapha Jemali is a former UN official who served as the former Regional Director of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He founded and chaired the Tunisian Refugee Council on June 28, 2016, a humanitarian non-governmental organization to help manage issues related to asylum in Tunisia and to support the Tunisian authorities in their efforts to find appropriate solutions to the difficulties faced by refugees in Tunisia.
He was arrested on May 9, 2024, in connection with the announcement of a request for proposals for sheltering vulnerable situations of refugees and asylum seekers in response to the requirements of national laws and transparency, and was investigated on suspicion of “forming a consortium to launder money using social activity facilities, fraud and the possession and use of fraudulent documents” and heard by the investigative registry, whether at the Tunis Court of First Instance or the Economic and Financial Judicial Pole.
